Digital Real Estate
A public presence and control of its foundations are different things.
A website can look established while the owner is unable to renew its domain, recover an account or obtain its source files. That gap often stays invisible until a staff member leaves, an agency relationship changes or an urgent repair is needed. The brand’s continuity depends on more than what appears on screen.
Inventory the parts you depend on.
Start with the domain registration, hosting account, website files, brand assets, email, social accounts, customer records and any payment or booking tools. For each item, identify the account holder, renewal responsibility, recovery method and authorized administrators. Record where access is managed; do not put passwords in a shared planning document.
“We have the login” is an incomplete answer. Someone may be able to edit a page while another party controls the account that can remove it. The practical test is whether the business can maintain, recover and transfer the service when an authorized change is needed.
Know what registration establishes.
ICANN’s registrant resources describe the person or entity holding the rights to a registered domain as the registrant, within the domain registration system. Its benefits and responsibilities resource explains that registration is subject to a registrar agreement. A domain is therefore something to administer carefully, with current information and renewal responsibility.
That source does not settle ownership of your website content, custom code, photographs or customer records. Those questions depend on the relevant agreements and circumstances. Our operational recommendation is to make those responsibilities explicit in the engagement rather than assume that payment for a website resolves every asset question.
Design an orderly handoff.
A handoff should identify delivered files, the accounts the business controls, licensed components, renewal dates and routine tasks. It should also distinguish your material from third party services. A social account offers useful reach, but its availability and features depend on a platform you do not operate. Keep copies of approved brand assets and business content in an organized location under your control.
For a portfolio, use a central inventory with a separate entry for every operating brand. Shared direction should not obscure which business owns a domain or which team can access customer information.

The owner’s next decision
Ask who can renew, recover and transfer each essential service. Resolve missing responsibility before a redesign adds more tools to an already unclear foundation.
